Inspite of its everlasting beauty and charm, Wood is not being preferred as the choice of material for countertops because many people are not acquainted with different ways of managing wood countertops. The most common problem with a wood counter top is that it is not resistant to stains, spills, scratches and heat. However, there are ways to avoid these problems. The best way to protect wood from stains is to be careful and avoid falling of any colored material onto the surface, which is nothing but impossible. In case of discolorations caused stains, all that one has to do is to try rubbing some lemon juice on the spot. Or else, one can even use hydrogen peroxide or bleach in a very mild concentration. A frequent oil massage can improve the resistance of wood to stains.
Another form of damage caused to a wood countertop is through scratches, cuts and burns. In this case, the wood surface has to be rubbed with sand paper so as to smoothen the surface. Later, pour warm mineral oil on the scratch or burnt surface and rub it using a rag. Leave it on the surface for 20-30 minutes and then wipe away anything that is present in excess using a clean paper towel. Another problem with these counter tops is vinegar. Since vinegar is acidic, it is capable of dissolving the glue that holds two pieces of wood together. Best way to avoid this problem is to instantly wipe away any spillage of vinegar.
